LifeSize: Long Delay When Dialing Voice Call

I had 3x Express 220 LifeSize units experience an incredibly long delay (20 to 50 seconds) when dialing a telephone number on the Gen 2 phone before the call would actually complete.

The Express’ are registered as SIP extensions to a ShoreTel system.

The root cause of the delay is the LifeSize codec trying the MCU first, then H.323 then SIP to make the call. The first two would time out then it would complete over SIP.

To make the phone use SIP for voice dialing you need to go to the keypad on the Gen 2 phone:

Go to: System > Settings > Enter your Admin password > Scroll down to the bottom > Voice Dialing

Toggle the voice dialing option, it was off on this install.

Try your call again and it should complete in just a couple seconds!

Things to note:

  • The latest firmware needs to be installed for this option to be available
  • This unit was on 4.11.13(1). The upgrade path was 4.11.13(1) > 4.12.0(30) > 5.0.0(14) > 5.0.5(8)
